Understanding Cargo Container Grades
For intermodal transport, container certification matters. Here's what each grade means for your logistics operations.
Cargo Worthy (CWO)
For ShippingRequired for ocean freight and intermodal transport. Containers have been inspected and certified to meet international safety standards for shipping.
Certification Requirements:
- Valid CSC Plate - Convention for Safe Containers certification
- Structural Integrity - Passed load testing for stacking
- IICL-5 Standard - Institute of International Container Lessors
- Forklift Pockets - Verified for safe handling
Use CWO When:
- Shipping via ocean freight
- Intermodal rail transport
- International export operations
- Shipping line requirements
Wind & Water Tight (WWT)
Ground UseFor stationary storage and ground transport only. Provides excellent protection but lacks current CSC certification for ocean shipping.
Condition Standards:
- Weatherproof - No leaks, doors seal properly
- Structurally Sound - Safe for ground stacking
- Functional Hardware - Locks, hinges, gaskets work
- No CSC Plate - Cannot be used for ocean shipping
Use WWT When:
- On-site storage at facilities
- Domestic trucking only
- Yard storage and staging
- Lower cost is priority
Quick Reference: Which Grade Do You Need?
| Transport Method | CWO Required? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean Freight (FCL) | Yes | Shipping lines require valid CSC plate |
| Intermodal Rail | Yes | BNSF, UP require CSC certification |
| Domestic Trucking | No | WWT sufficient for over-the-road |
| Yard Storage | No | WWT provides same protection |
| Construction Site | No | Save $400+ with WWT grade |
